Travel Day - Part 3

May 10, 2022

I know, it’s really Day 2 but since I’ve had so little sleep I feel like it’s still just one long day.

After getting settled in the hotel, we headed out to explore and find something to eat.  This is a pretty popular place with fellow tourists everywhere but not so bad that it makes wandering the marketplace hard to do.  We ended up at a pizza place and we all got a slice of one of the many pizzas they had to offer.  A large slice was 4 Euros.  Mine was tomato sauce, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil on a crust that was great, crusty on the bottom with large holes in the crumb along the edge.

We decided to eat in the nearby alleyway.

Next up we wanted to see a few of the Venice Biennale art exhibitions that are in satellite locations so off we went.

The first one we stopped at was the work of Francesca Leone, an Italian artist who constructs sculpture out of recycled sheet metal and oil.

It was time to walk again and we headed to the Rialto Bridge.

It does provide some nice views.

And a place for a group picture.

From the left is Elizabeth, Aiden, Morgan, Mark, Jodi, Heather, and Isabelle.

On a walk down another narrow alleyway I saw some laundry being dried.

We crossed a small bridge with this view of some quiet water.

We then stopped at the Bolivian exhibition, a collaborative installation of 25 artists who use the beliefs of the indigenous people of that country to talk about the power of the inner earth, where their ancestors go, and current people’s place in this system.  There were many paintings which our guide indicated were a type a preliminary work that led to the large installation in the rear of the gallery.

We meandered a bit more and some of the group decided to head back to the hotel for a while.  Jodi, Elizabeth, Mark, and I headed out to the main canal and found a nice place to get some adult refreshment while we watched the scenery.  I had an Italian IPA which was surprisingly good considering that the country is not known for its beer-making.

The last member of the group, Terrin, had a delayed flight in France but texted us to let us know he had arrived.  We headed back to the hotel and ran into him a block or two away.

We went back to the hotel and while I decided to take a break, and write this entry, the others went out exploring.  We’ll regroup at 7:30pm for a dinner.
