Wednesday - Part 1 - Getting the Day Going

May 11, 2022

Today was our first trip to the Biennale, the primary reason for coming here, but that was not the only thing that filled our day.

After getting a good night’s sleep, which most of us really needed, we met up in the dining room of the hotel for the provided breakfast.  It was excellent.  There was fancy coffee for the fans of that and muesli and various cereals with an assortment of milks.  There was also yoghurt and juices (and I can recommend the carrot/limon/orange).  But that wasn’t all.

We sat at tables and the staff brought the rest of the food which included croissants, ham and turkey slices, cheese, various breads (the rye was wonderful) and, already on the table, were hard boiled eggs and little cream-filled pastries and an assortment of bars.

Next on the agenda was to head out to the Biennale, a one-mile walk from the hotel that starts out by taking us through the fish and vegetable marketplace outside our hotel.  This is a true wonder, right along the canal, and the colors were so bright and vivid as were the smells.  Words can’t due justice to the scene so I will let the pictures tell the story.

After wandering around the market, we headed to the Rialto Bridge which would point us to San Marco, the big church and plaza.  If you keep your eye out for them, there are signs that guide the way.  The routes is full of shops and vendors of all kinds.

Jodi stops us for some navigation tips should we decide to come back this way on our own.

A bit more walking through the city.

We arrived at San Marco and it was impressive.  The church is undergoing a restoration so there is a fair amount of fencing and scaffolding but that doesn’t detract from it making an impression.

The plaza is huge.

Jodi started quizzing us on our art history about our surroundings.  Who knew there would be a quiz?

The next part of the walk runs along the water’s edge and there are more vendors and load of boat action with water taxis taking passengers to other islands.

We walked by smaller canals.

We arrived at the main Biennale site, where the “Milk of Dreams” exhibition is located.

We were there a few minutes before opening so had to queue up for a bit but once it opened we got in quickly and immediately impressed by the enormity of what was a head of us.

Mark kept watch over us.

The building is very long and L-shape and when I say “very long” I mean VERY long.  The artists selected to exhibit here have provided the best in today’s Contemporary art, keeping with the theme of the show which also has a Surrealist flavor.  I do not intend writing a review as, of right now, I am overwhelmed by what I saw.  In my next post I’ll provide some photos to give you, the reader, just a sample of what we saw.
